Osprey

A osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is a large bird of prey that specializes in hunting fish. It is found on every continent except Antarctica and is also known as a sea hawk or fish eagle. 🎣

Physical Description

Ospreys have a slender body with long, narrow wings and a white head with a distinct brown stripe running through its eye. Their backs are dark brown, and their undersides are mostly white. They have powerful feet with spiny pads and sharp, curved talons that are perfect for catching and holding onto slippery fish.

Habitat and Diet

Ospreys are found near bodies of water, including lakes, rivers, estuaries, and coastlines. They are highly migratory, with some birds traveling thousands of miles between their breeding and wintering grounds. Their diet consists almost exclusively of fish.

Hunting Behavior

The osprey's hunting technique is a dramatic sight. It soars high above the water, then hovers and dives feet-first, often submerging completely to grab a fish with its powerful talons. Its ability to reverse its outer toe allows it to carry the fish headfirst in the air, which reduces wind resistance.
