A rooster, also known as a cock or cockeral, is an adult male chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus). They are known for their crowing, vibrant plumage, and territorial behavior.
Physical Description
Roosters are larger and more colorful than female chickens (hens). They have a long, flowing tail with sickle-shaped feathers and a prominent, fleshy crest on their head called a comb. They also have fleshy growths called wattles hanging from their chin. Both the comb and wattles are typically a vibrant red color. Roosters have sharp spurs on the back of their legs, which they use for fighting.
Behavior
Roosters are highly territorial and protective of their flock of hens. They will often stand watch and alert the flock to danger with loud crowing. Their crow is most commonly associated with sunrise, but they can and will crow at any time of day to assert dominance or communicate with other roosters. Roosters are also known to perform a courtship dance for hens, which involves strutting and a unique high-stepping movement.
